Māori Translation:
Tiaho mai rā
Te whetu o te ata
Kopu i te ao,
Pareārau i te pō
Ka tu te ao marama
he ao hara
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
Te whetu o te ata
Kopu i te ao,
Pareārau i te pō
Ka tu te ao marama
he ao hara
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
E kore te aroha,
E kaupare noa
Hoki mai rā ki ahau, e te tau.
Hoki mai rā ki ahau, e te tau.
Tiaho mai rā
Te whetu o te ata
Kopu i te ao,
Pareārau i te pō
Ka tu he o marama
he ahara
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau
E kaupare noa
Hoki mai rā ki ahau, e te tau.
Hoki mai rā ki ahau, e te tau.
Tiaho mai rā
Te whetu o te ata
Kopu i te ao,
Pareārau i te pō
Ka tu he o marama
he ahara
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau

English Translation:
Shining over there
Is the morning star
Venus in the dawn,
Saturn in the night
The full moon is rising
Above a sinful world
You rise up there as a sign to me
You rise up there as a sign to me...
...that love does not
Randomly turn away.
Come back to me my darling
Come back to me my darling
Shining over there
Is the morning star
Venus in the dawn,
Saturn in the night
The full moon is rising a
Above a sinful world
You rise up there as a sign to me
You rise up there as a sign to me.

I enjoy this song because it may be only a small one, but it has a great timing and rhythm towards it, making it a gentle but effective Waiata.

Kia ora Aedan,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for introducing me to this beautiful waiata. It it quite a sad song isn't it? Sad, but beautiful nonetheless. I agree that it is a gentle, but effective waiata. It's great that you have included a link to the waiata so that other people can watch it.
I've been listening to 'Aotearoa' a lot lately. I think it is such a powerful and unifying song for New Zealanders! I'll add a link and you can tell me what you this of this waiata.
